FATHERS, SONS, CREDIBILITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY

There is significant revelation being shared abroad regarding the role of spiritual fathers in the lives of sons. The prophetic promise of Malachi 4:5-6 is being fulfilled. The hearts of fathers and sons are being reconciled ~ both in the natural and spiritual realms.

The "adopting" of sons by fathers, and fathers by sons, is filling voids left in lives of many who were fathered neither in the natural or spiritual realms. I receive emails ~ several each week ~ particularly from the African continent and Southeast Asia.

It is obvious that these men are sincere in their requests for me to be their spiritual father. They are recognizing their lack, and realizing that God wants to fill the voids in their lives and experiences, so that they may enjoy wholeness.

I am perplexed by an inner conflict every time I receive one of these requests. I take them seriously. I care about these men, and feel deeply about their desire. Yet, I wrestle with my own conscience, believing that credibility should be given where there is accountability.

One of the great hindrances to the emerging kingdom is people walking in authority who are not under authority. I cannot affirm credible anyone who is not accountable. How can I take responsibility for someone whom I have never seen, and have no way of examining the fruit of his life and ministry?

Yet, I don’t believe that these men who are calling me, "Dad," "Daddy," "Papa," have in their heart to be independent anarchists or lone rangers. I believe that they are crying out for accountability when they request my spiritual fatherhood.

I am honored by their requests. It is humbling that anyone could find a website, pray, and believe that God has appointed me to be his spiritual father ~ on the other side of the globe!

I don’t lightly dismiss these requests. I hasten to respond. I do not promise to be their father. Neither do I reject them, or tell them that they should not call me such.

I spell out my limitations to them so that their expectations are realistic. I let them know that I cannot visit them, or send money. I let them know that I cannot account to God for their souls. I offer them the website teachings and commentaries, my prayers, and a willingness to counsel them within the severe limitations of email.

I don’t know what else to do.
